Morgan: Building a Philanthropic Foundation from the Ground Up
How We Helped a First-Time Philanthropist Launch a Lifetime of Meaningful Giving

THE CHALLENGE

An unexpected wealth event left Morgan with newfound capacity to give and time to devote to philanthropy. She was enthusiastic about embarking on her philanthropic journey, but had no prior experience. To succeed, she needed an introduction to the philanthropic process, guidance on early planning, and a strong grounding in her values and vision. In short, she needed a giving plan built from scratch.

THE SOUND METHOD IN ACTION

#1 Listen

We began by creating space to explore who Morgan was and what mattered most to her. Through deep conversation, we helped her identify her core values and priority areas of interest—the foundation of everything that would follow. We listened to her hopes for what giving could mean in her life, her questions about the process, and her vision for the impact she wanted to create. This wasn't just information gathering; it was the beginning of a relationship built on trust and genuine curiosity.

#2 Assess

Even though Morgan was new to philanthropy, we met her where she was at. We assessed her capacity for giving, her available time and energy, and the operational questions that would shape her approach. We explored parameters for decision-making, time commitment, potential family involvement, giving style, and budget. This assessment helped us understand not just what resources Morgan had, but also how she wanted to show up as a philanthropist and which structures would best support her.

#3 Design

Together, we co-created a comprehensive giving plan tailored specifically to Morgan's values, interests, and life. The detailed Plan & Recommendation Report included a clear mission statement, guiding principles, recommendations for family involvement, a personalized Criteria Checklist for evaluating grantees, a budget structure reflecting her strategic goals, and resources, including a qualified list of prospective grantees. We reviewed and refined the plan together, ensuring it felt authentic to her and would serve her for years to come.

#4 Implement

We brought Morgan's vision to life through hands-on immersion in the philanthropic community. We arranged meetings with field experts and seasoned philanthropists who shared personal insights and wisdom. We coordinated site visits to three local, globally-focused organizations working in her areas of interest. This broad exposure helped Morgan narrow her focus, build confidence, and refine her approach. The journey culminated in a transformative trip to Africa with her stepdaughter to see her grantees' work firsthand.

THE RESULT

Through The Sound Method, what began as a business-minded inquiry into philanthropy became a life-changing transformation. Morgan moved from excitement and uncertainty to confidence and clarity. She now has the operational platform, tools, and relationships to sustain a lifetime of thoughtful, intentional, and joyful giving. Importantly, she discovered that effective philanthropy is about more than efficiency and impact. She learned it's a profoundly personal experience filled with growth, meaning, and connection. By working together, Morgan was able to launch her philanthropic journey equipped not just with a plan, but with purpose.

“It has been such a great pleasure working with Sound Philanthropy. I talk to all my friends and rave about what a wonderful experience this has been. They helped me keep my feet on the ground and encouraged my enthusiasm and inspiration—at the same time!”
